This post will be the first part of sharing related to colour in interior decoration. How we use colour in our homes depends on several factors i.e. space, light, proportion and texture. Small room is best decorated with bright colour. This statement is usually justified decorating the room with neutral colour. I personally believed that very bright colour is far better for the limited space as this colour will stay brilliance and rich with the low level light. Warm colours such as REDS, YELLOWS and ORANGES are welcoming and uplifting, thus suitable for hall way, stair and door way. These colours may scream out loud, but do not worry about this because time spend in these areas will be very short as people only passing through these areas. You may want to combine these colours with darker colours to tone down the screaming note.

If you are worried to use these colours then try natural light colours such as off-white (yellowish white, greenish white, magnolia). These colours emphasize the airy spacious atmosphere. Large space where people will spend most of their time is best decorated with colours that mimic our surrounding nature. These colours will enhance relaxation and coziness. Natural colours may be related to plants (OLIVE GREEN), landscape (SKY BLUE, SEA BLUE) and soil (ASH BROWN, TERRACOTA RED, SANDY BROWN). These natural colours can be easily combined with other colours such as WHITE to give more interesting colour contrast. Suitable colour combinations will be shared in the coming post. Remember! try not to use more than THREE colours in one room. If too many colours, your home will look tasteless and may be like a KINDERGARTEN! Look at your surrounding to get a better idea on the choice of colours. Start with what you have in your home. This will help you to reduce the cost for accesories or soft furnishing. Then start to organize your colour scheme or theme.

Colour textures include matt, glossy and satin. Matt colour will look lighter than the glossy one. When choosing the colour texture, it is important to see the surface texture. Glossy colours require very smooth surface for painting. This is less crutial with matt colour texture. Visit the hardware store to see the selection of available colour and texture. Do not trust the colour you see in the store as this can look different at your home due to different lighting. The colour shades will change at day time dan night time. Do consider this. Specially mixed colours will require extra budget from your pocket.
